What started out as a slow post-holiday week kicked up yesterday, but finds its way back to normal on this Friday.

WINNERS

HBO  (HBO) 4.98 +1.17 +23.49%

If there's any channel that's made an effort to tell a variety of black stories, this is it.  We all know about The Wire and their documentaries, but increasingly we've been impressed by their sports shows like Hard Knocks, 24-7 and Real Sports, which all do great jobs of showing us the characters behind the athletes we root for every weekend.

It's still TV, but it's pretty damn great.

LOSERS

Fans of "For Colored Girls..." (F4CG)    .36 -.71 -66.36%

Our deepest condolences.

Maybe we're wrong.  Maybe the adaptation won't suck.  Yeah, we wouldn't bet on it either.

RACE WAR ALERT!!! -- would be the headline if this were Drudge... but we're not.  So the Index falls slightly behind a race motivated prison riot in California.

BUY

The Nine Lives of Marion Barry

It's no secret that we here at the Index have had fun with Barry's story.  But, as much as anything, what fascinates us is his continued stay in the spotlight.  This HBO doc is right in our wheelhouse.

Hey Black Men, looking for a new way to attract the attention of law enforcement?  How about this: Trying To Get Into Your Own Home While Black.

Ah, Boston... all the racism of the deep south, minus the awesome food.

BUY

HBO'S Prom Night in Mississippi

Much like excellent The Order of Myths, this documentary explores the continued tradition of segregation in the deep south.

SELL

German Sprite Ads

Just last week we gave some dap to Microsoft for going the interracial lovin' route in an ad.  A German Sprite ad shows how to do it the wrong way.

Another week ends with the Index making steady gains.

WINNERS

New Orleans (NOLA) 17.31 +3.33 +19.24%

Some good news as HBO picks up David Simon's New Orleans based show "Treme", about a Crescent City neighborhood, post-Katrina, and the musicians who live there.

Treme Brass Band

Bringing work and attention being brought to the still reeling city can't be a bad thing.

LOSERS

Marion Barry (CRKMAOR) 1.31 -.97 -42.54%

The Washington D.C. City Council nearly unanimously in support of gay marriage legislation, with former Mayor Barry the lone holdout.  His reasons for not supporting gay marriage... rather, dubious.

Who else would miss the sound of progress?
