It's been an up-and-down week for both the Index and President Barack Obama -- who, from capping executive pay to promoting his economic stimulus package, has been putting his stamp on his first 100 days.

THIS DAY IN THE BLACK MARKET

Bsi 543.96 -73.39 -11.89%

A dark day in New York and on the Index as the world learns a symbol of symbol of black victimhood at the hands of police dies, unarmed, in the street...

...and a symbol of black rage returns to the court.

Baseball writers will surely take delight in the fact that a federal judge unsealed hundreds of pages of documents that make-up the backbone of the case against Barry Bonds, but analysts here were hoping for a different result in the steroids investigation.

Not so much because we think people should go to jail for steroids use, but rather because it'd be nice to expose the hypocrisy and mania surrounding the very issue of cheating and lawlessness.

Let's face it: to many Americans, if you're not cheating, you're not trying.

Up until now there was about as much evidence of cheating against Bonds in the public record as there is of another, more celebrated, athlete.  Who, for some reason, hasn't had his career met with the same scrutiny -- not at least on these shores.

Yes, America, this guy probably cheated, too.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH WATCH

In honor of Black History Month we here at the Index present this special feature to keep you abreast of those happenings you'll only find in February.  Think of it as the TV listings at the back of Jet Magazine, but with fewer Tim Reid references.

The choice as head of the Republican party comes off as a cynical playing of identity politics, sending the Index lower for the first time in nearly three weeks.

"See, we've got one too."

Of course, what do we expect from people who brought us him...

and her.

...And, at its worst, an excuse to re-air Puffy's "Raisin in the Sun".

Please, please, please people... read something -- anything -- by Lorraine Hansbury OTHER than "Raisin in the Sun".  She really was a brilliant writer and "Raisin" doesn't quite give you the full picture.

The Index starts the week in positive territory after the Steelers' win in Super Bowl XLIII -- not because Mike Tomlin is only the second black head coach to lead his team to a NFL championship, but because it's not THE story anymore.
