President Obama's speech in Cairo showed the kind of diplomatic initiative and new direction that the Market hoped for when he was elected.

"Miracle at St. Anna" may have disappointed and you're not likely to see their service and sacrifice in "Saving Private Ryan", so as President Obama prepares to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the landing at Normandy it's only appropriate that we recognize the overlooked contributions of black veterans.

That Harvard's not letting the senior graduate after being associated with a homicide on campus is clearly pain enough, but that her black Harvard classmates and alums have turned their backs on her has got to sting.

It seems Black Harvard hasn't been this united against something since the Soul Man kerfuffle of '86.

Here in the blog-o-sphere there's been lamenting and gnashing of teeth over the cancelation of two black sit-coms (The Game and Everybody Hates Chris -- never mind the facts that those shows were low-rated and had run for a combined 152 episodes in a day and age when even a Friends spin-off wasn't long for this world).  And there's great skepticism about whether or not Fox's Brothers will resurrect the black family sit-com.

Let's see... Chill Mitchell, CCH Pounder, the NFL Single Season Sack Leader and Apollo Creed.  Sure.  Why not?

But perhaps we're looking in the wrong place for comedy.  At least that's what it seems as some recent commercials have seemed sharper and funnier than anything we've seen on the air in a while.

Sometimes the lack of bad news is enough to stand in for good news.

Hip-Hop & a Sense of Humor

Remember when hip-hop used to be fun and even funny?

Now there's so much today about being "hard" or "real" or "street" that nothing makes you smile anymore.

Well, Almost nothing. If Eminem was in on this I'm even more impressed, given hip-hop homophobia and general humorlessness.

Thank god for people like Kid Cudi, 88 Keys and The Cool Kids who realized that even rappers need to smile.

He really is setting himself up as the next R. Kelly -- a prophetic irony savant.

Rick Ross... the new prolific idiot.

Yeah, the "or" isn't pretty.  Maybe the Times-Observer should jump to the head of the going out of business line.
