The market responds positively to news that the Writers Guild of America will be picketing the opening of Tyler Perry's new studio Saturday.

Live better. Work Union.

Perry has amassed a fortune catering to the black audience while refusing to compensate his African-American writers at union standards. Perpetuating an already malignant wage discrepancy between writers of color and their white counterparts. Saturday's action will be a step in the right direction.

WINNERS

George Tillman, Jr. (GT2) 6.52 +1.19 +18.25%

Tillman hasn't directed a movie since 2000's "Men of Honor", but if the trailer for "Notorious" is any indication, now's the time to buy.

Bo Diddley. Dead. Muddy Waters. Dead. R.L. Burnside. Dead. All the blues done gone. So much so that the best blues band around is made up of two guys from Akron, OH.

Not that there's anything to be ashamed of, as these Junior Kimbrough acolytes have found a way to make the music vital again. It's just damn good music.

What, you say you don't know Junior Kimbrough? What kind of negro are you?

The market turns upward, boosted by overseas Indexes as Richard Ayoade and "The IT Crowd" finally comes to the U.S.

Know this guy? You should. He's one of the funniest chaps on either side of the Atlantic.

Also check out his work in "Garth Marengi's Dark Places" as well as the brilliant Armando Iannuci's "Time Trumpet"

News that Jacksonville Jaguars offensive tackle Richard Collier will be paralyzed from the waist down and have a leg amputated following a senseless shooting Sept. 2 forces a modest sell-off.

It just doesn't make any sense.

After yesterday's financial mess even this Index takes a hit. You know what they say, "last hired.. first fired."

Spike Lee

With "Miracle at St. Anna" disappointing at the box office you really have to ask yourself, apart from documentaries, when was the last time Spike made a good movie?

Great director...

...not such a great story-teller.

A bad week for John McCain and questions about his ties to gambling lift the Index.

I obviously can't see anything wrong with gambling... look at my V.P. pick. (rimshot!)
