This truly is the end of an era. The most famous person on the planet. The King of Pop. The single greatest performer of all time, has died. And with him a connection that spanned generations and the globe.

In an age as diverse and fractured as ours it's hard to believe there'll ever be another figure as unifying as this. I think it's safe to say that billions of people listened to the music of Michael Jackson yesterday. Billions. No one else on the planet could have that many people thinking the same thing. Dammit if that's not a beautiful thing.

In light of recent revelations about Richard Nixon's feelings toward abortion and interracial relationships...

“There are times when an abortion is necessary. I know that. When you have a black and a white. Or a rape.”

...the Market takes relief in the simple fact that things have changed.

Advance word has it that director Michael Bay has gone to the well for his latest picture Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen by adding a touch of coon in the form of two jive-talking robots (one even has a gold tooth).

Seriously Michael... that's shit's fucked up.  Though, not much more fucked up than the racial lens Todd Phillips directed The Hangover through.  Yeah, that's right.  I said it.

That the Voting Rights Act lives to see another day pushes the Index higher.

BUY

Chris Brown

A cynical recommendation, certainly.  But with his slap on the wrist probation sentence and the news that the singer has Keri Hilson signed up to collaborate on his new album the inevitable CB reclamation is up and underway.

Don't get too close, girl...

SELL

Clarence Thomas

Let's see... the SCOTUS upholds the constitutionality of the Voting Rights Act 8-1.  Who dissents?  You guessed it.

As wrongheaded a decision as it is, we also have to admit... it's kinda gangsta.

The Market jumps after the Juneteenth Senate apology for slavery.

Sorry Negroes.  Um... we mean -- Sorry, Negroes. (Who says punctuation isn't important).

Of course, we're not cynical enough to find any kind of coincidence in the timing of the apology and the strong popularity of the first black Commander in Chief.

Some may say an apology doesn't mean much.  Those people have probably never been married.
