News that statistics showing that the rate of blacks in state prisons has dropped 22% over the past decade boosts the Index.

That being said, the Washington Post goes as far as to link the drop to the recent shift in drug culture from crack cocaine to methamphetamines -- which leads analysts here to conclude that a serious re-examination of drug policy is still necessary.

The winning design for the upcoming National Museum of African-American History and Culture has been awarded to Tanzanian David Adjaye, thus adding museum architecture to the list of jobs African-Americans refuse to do.

Kidding, of course.  Congratulations David.  We're just glad there's going to be a museum.

The Congressional Black Caucus made the first step, and now President Obama takes the next one as the United States seems to be edging ever closer to normalized relations with Cuba.

Jozy Altidore

Freddie Adu may get a lot of the press, but Altidore is just as much the future of American soccer.

Black Sit-Coms

With the end of "The Game" and "Everybody Hates Chris" it looks like Tyler Perry's "House of Payne" and "Meet the Browns" are about all that's left.  Just in time for the 25th Anniversary of the debut of the Cosby Show.

Hundreds of channels... and nothing on.

The New York Times says that New York Governor David Patterson has slipped below 50% approval among black voters.  Ye gods, that's not how you get re-elected... or in his case, elected.

If Patterson doesn't succeed does that mean it'll be another millennia before New York elects another black guy or will it be blamed on his being blind, ruling out that demographic for the coming eons.

Yeah, that's right, both of you.  Congratulations.  Let's hope the other states follow suit.

Wanda's right, you know.

Affirmative Action (AAAA) 29.26 -7.62 -20.66%

The U.S. Supreme Court will soon be hearing a reverse discrimination case brought by Connecticut firefighters.  In the case the city of New Haven threw out a firefighters' liutenents exam after no blacks passed the test.

Thirty-two percent of New Haven firefighters are black.  So you know brothers can do the job.

The lesson should have been, "study harder next time, brothers".  Instead a conservative leaning court could deal another blow to a policy that promotes inclusion into otherwise closed areas of opportunity.  Affirmative Action works.  Analysts here strongly believe that.  What doesn't is quota systems (there's a difference).

New polling shows that in the wake of her trip to the United Kingdom for the G20 Summit, Americans feel that First Lady Michelle Obama, inaccurately considered a liability on the campaign trail, has boosted the image of the country abroad.

The Index moves higher on the news of the Congressional Black Caucus' visit with Fidel and Raul Castro in Cuba.

Perhaps now the United States can look toward ending its short-sighted, hypocritical and wholly political boycott of our island neighbor.
