Tyler Perry starts to cast For Colored Girls... Which is alternately titled: How I Learned To Stop Worrying About Who Tyler Perry Is Casting In For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow is Enuf And Love The Bomb: Based on the Novel Push By Sapphire. Or maybe it isn't.

Either way, yawn.

What do you get when you cross Oprah with Tyler Perry (other than one really, big woman*) -- the audience favorite at the Toronto Independent Film Festival.

Could we be looking at a film that would win Tyler Perry and Oscar?  We're going to have to see it to believe it.

Tyler Perry As An Artist

No one over here has ever been bullish on Perry, but it's clear he has an audience.  What he isn't is someone who has ANY idea of what happens in the professional landscape on which he exists, but won't hesitate to complain about not getting respect in Hollywood.  If the results of his hurried projects aren't enough proof, there's also this quote from a recent interview about his upcoming role in J.J. Abrams' upcoming "Star Trek" movie.

It was when Abrams personally called and admitted to being a fan that Perry did some resarch, because he honestly didn't know who the "Lost" creator was.

"When I found out the things he had done and had a conversation with him and saw him work I knew right away he was a kindred soul.  I think he's the Jewish version of me...
Then, for the Trekkies, there's this,
Perry, who is rumored to play the head of Starfleet Academy, admits, "I've never been a fan of 'Star Tred.' I don't know anything about it.  Just remember someone saying, 'Beam me up,' while I was walking through the den and looking at the television going, 'What the hell is that?'"

"Say what?!?"

There's little doubt among analysts that Perry benefits from Hollywood's myopic, "Highlander" approach to black talent -- "There can be only one".

Six in one hand...

Half a dozen in the other.

Right now, Perry is on top, and this week his abisamal "House of Payne" celebrated 100 episodes of lowering the expectations of the black viewing audience.  Congratulations.

To be fair, at least "House of Payne" isn't THIS bad...

Whether you're into Perry's Medea schtick or not, the man topped $40 million this past weekend -- in the midst of a deep recession.  It will be interesting to see what kind of filmmaker Perry evolves into once he realizes he has all the money he could possibly need.

Yes... THAT Ron Howard.  I think we're taking this Obama thing I little too seriously.

Kudos to Howard, though.  Who pulls his most surprising move since "Arrested Development".

The market responds positively to news that the Writers Guild of America will be picketing the opening of Tyler Perry's new studio Saturday.

Live better. Work Union.

Perry has amassed a fortune catering to the black audience while refusing to compensate his African-American writers at union standards. Perpetuating an already malignant wage discrepancy between writers of color and their white counterparts. Saturday's action will be a step in the right direction.

Backdoor gains after making it onto the losers column on July, 18 brought about by another group's not understanding metaphor, as advocates for the blind protest the new movie "Blindness"... you know, the one based on the Nobel prize winning allegory.
"The National Federation of the Blind condemns and deplores this film, which will do substantial harm to the blind of America and the world. Blind people in this film are portrayed as incompetent, filthy, vicious, and depraved. They are unable to do even the simplest things like dressing, bathing, and finding the bathroom. The truth is that blind people regularly do all of the same things that sighted people do."
Perhaps this is because the characters in the book/movie aren't blind, but are rather, suddenly struck with blindness.  Despite the title, it has nothing to do with THE BLIND.  It's good to know we're not the only people who sometimes don't get it.

Yeah, we talking about you, Jesse!

LOSERS

Black Period Pieces  (BPP) 9.24 -2.56 -21.69

It seems there are three types of black films being made today.  Tyler Perry movies, Gangsta/Hood movies, and feel good period pieces (anything set in the past with overt racism and/or a Motown soundtrack).

Love football.  Love Ernie Davis.  But I would still like to see a movie deal with contemporary issues of race.

I'm sorry, I should have made myself clear.  One that ISN'T god-awful.

The limits on the first two "genres" are clear, but BPP does just as little to tell the story of the 30 million different ways there are to be black in America.  In addition, these movies seem to make racism, institutional or otherwise, seem like a relic of the past.  If the ugly tone the election took this week is any indication, that's anything but the case.

Like I said, it's getting ugly out there.

Blacks and the Mobile Internet

A latest Pew Report notes that blacks are the mobile internet's best customers.

African Americans are the most active users of the mobile internet – and their use of it is also growing the fastest. This means the digital divide between African Americans and white Americans diminishes when mobile use is taken into account.

  • 48% of Africans Americans have at one time used their mobile device to access the internet for information, emailing, or instant-messaging, half again the national average of 32%.
  • 29% of African Americans use the internet on their handheld on an average day, also about half again the national average of 19%.
  • Compared with 2007, when 12% of African Americans used the internet on their mobile on the average day, use of the mobile internet is up by 141%.

The high level of activity among African Americans on mobile devices helps offset lower levels of access tools that have been traditional onramps to the internet, namely desktop computers, laptops, and home broadband connections.

  • By a 59% to 45% margin, white Americans are more likely to go online using a computer on a typical day than African Americans.
  • When mobile devices are included in the mix, the gap is cut in half; 61% of whites go online on the average day when mobile access is included while 54% of African Americans do.
  • Looking across a range of digital activities – some done online typically using a computer and others being non-voice data activities on a mobile device – African American and white Americans, on average, do the same number of activities.
